It is a very old constellation. Interestingly, Virgo is the only female figure among the constellations of the Zodiac, and has symbolized an extensive range of deities since the prolegomena of stele history.
 
 Among others, she was identified as Ishtar, the goddess of fertility of the Babylonians; with Astreia, the Roman goddess of justice and with Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvests (that the Romans associate to Ceres).
 
 Generally, in his representations, Virgo appears with an ear of wheat, or carrying the scales of Libra, the adjacent constellation.
 
 One of the legends associated with this constellation relates that the Virgin would be Erígone, daughter of Icarius - to whom Dionísio had unveiled the secret of the production of the wine. When they first tasted and felt the intoxicating effects of this drink, the local villagers believed that Icarius had tried to poison them and killed him. Maera, Icarius's dog, immediately calls Erígone's attention to the murder of his father and this, being unable to bear such sadness, ends up ending his life by hanging himself. The gods, moved by such a tragedy, would have placed the actors in the sky, in the form of the constellations of Virgen Erígon), Boötes (Icarius) and Cão Menor (Maera).
 
 Its location in the sky is not obvious, as it contains only one star of considerable brightness, Alpha Virginis, with the proper name "Spica" or "Espiga". However, after finding the mentioned star, using the constellation of Leo as a close reference, Virgo becomes easily recognizable.
